The Speech

Veera met Sean through friends. He was in the military academy the first time they were made to slide into each other’s DMs. It wasn’t love at first sight. They didn’t even meet the first time. It was arranged by mutual friends but when they talked, something sparked. It was like fire meets gasoline. They had never felt what they felt with just talking to each other. It was magical.

Veera loved his sense of humor. He loved Veera’s carefree nature. They both enjoyed watching romcoms. They watched You’ve got mail together. They say long distance doesn't work, but they watched this movie on the phone. Streaming where they were, crying and laughing together. They were falling head first but they felt like they were flying.

It seems like everything was going smooth until it wasn’t anymore. When you grow so close so soon, it surely doesn’t take long to fall apart as well. They couldn’t meet each other in person. They tried but for some or the other reason they ended up standing each other up. And, however understanding you might be, it did hurt not being a priority to the other. The ego clashes were so frequent sometimes that they started ignoring each other for days and it became awkward. There came a time when all they wanted was to talk to each other, but they just couldn’t be the first one. it was sad.

It’s tough being sad all the time so they decided to move on, meeting other people, going out. Veera met a musician, who was unlike anything she liked as a person but she liked the music and she was not having a very tough time tolerating this obnoxious guy who was very boastful and self-obsessed. Did she usually hate it? Hell yeah! Did she care right now though? NO. It was happier to see her happier, for continuing with herself.

We were drinking at the bar; downing beer bombs that night. Veera wanted to get drunk, crazy drunk. She had had a crazy week at the labs when there was a soft tap on her shoulder. She turned and gasped, which made me turn and gasp.

“Am I drunk already Vivian?” she asked me. “Last I remember one beer doesn’t do that to me.”

“You’re drunk? I think I am drunk.” I said, just as surprised as she was.

“Hi Veera! Hello Vivian!” said a uniform-clad Sean. “How have you been Veera.”

“I have been okay! Didn’t expect the first time we’ll meet will be like this. Heck I didn’t think we'd meet at all.” She said.

“Neither did I.” he said, “But I am glad I ran into you. I am sorry about cutting you off. I missed you. You and I, we go along really well.”

“I am sorry too.” She said.

“And I’ll be dancing.” Said I.

Three years from that, today I saw my best friend Veera dressed in white, walking down the aisle, looking like an angel, not because she’s wearing white, but also because she looks happy. She looks radiant.

And with that I put down my pen. I think this is a good maid of honor speech for Veera’s wedding. She got a Sean.
